Join fishing columnist David Obirek the first Thursday of the month in the Selkirk Journal, Stonewall Argus & Teulon Times and Interlake Spectator. David will talk fishing and more while promoting the local Interlake region.

Currently residing in Selkirk Manitoba with his family and growing up in Winnipeg,
David Obirek has spent much of his life fishing on the north portion of the Red River. Introduced to the sport by his father and grandfather, David has fished the Selkirk area since the mid 1970's.

 

Through his love of fishing, David began his journey on the tournament scene by volunteering (2003-2005) with one of Selkirk's best known fishing events, The Red River Walleye Challenge (RRWC). David was later appointed a Director (2005-2008) where he played a significant role in helping increase the events exposure and popularity, raising in excess of $30,000 for Breast Cancer Research. David continues to assist with local charitable fishing events such as Kids Fishing for a Cure and is Co-Host of a new up and coming Manitoba based Digital Media Show “Ready-Set-Fish”. The show is scheduled to be launched in 2018. David is an all-season angler and when not on the boat during the spring, summer and fall, he can be found chasing legendary “greenback” walleye in the winter on Lake Winnipeg and the Red River.

With the growth of tournament fishing, David took his skills to the next level and joined the CWT- Central Walleye Trail during it's inaugural season in 2014. David Continues to compete on the CWT and in 2014 was recipient of the "Big Fish" Award that recognizes the biggest fish caught during the CWT season at qualifying events. David has also had a top 10 (7th) and top 15 (14th) finish, both coming at The Walleye Masters Cup- Red River in 2014 and 2015 respectively. David was also ranked 27th overall on the CWT in 2015 and 41st overall in 2016.

  

Besides fishing, David has spent nearly 10-years in the media and public relations industry having worked for the Federal Government, Junior 'A' Hockey and Premiere Van Lines for their episode on the TV reality show Undercover Boss Canada.
